THE WINADU BUGLER AND THE WINADUDE

MLB PREVIEW

The Bugler says:

“Shelley’s Pirates win the Pennant”

Parity: that is the best word to describe the National League this season. No team is strong enough to win one hundred games. That should make for some compelling pennant races down the stretch. The Mets went out and spent a lot of money to land Mo Vaughn and Roberto Alomar. The offense should be solid but the pitching remains suspect. The Braves are always dangerous and the addition of Gary Sheffield could make them the class of the league. The Diamondbacks are the defending World Series champion and as long as The Big Unit and Schilling remain healthy, they will contend. The real surprise of this year, though, will be from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Shelley’s Pirates have made great moves in the offseason and are poised to be the Cinderella team of the season. Here is what the playoffs will look like:

East Champ: Braves – Sorry Mets fans, the Braves have better pitching and better hitting.
Central Champ: Pirates – A fantastic middle of the order with Kendall, Giles, Ramirez, Rios, and Young should make pitchers frightened.
West Champ: Giants – Bonds may not get to 73 this year, but he will be able to lead his team to a division championship.
Wildcard: D-Backs – Johnson and Schilling are just too good. The D-Backs should win enough games to make it to the playoffs.

And the winner is …

Cy Young: Schilling, D-Backs – Look for him to prove that he is more valuable than The Big Unit.
Rookie: Josh Beckett, Marlins – This youngster will be able to help the Marlins contend for a playoff spot. Stock up on his rookie cards, he will be awesome.
MVP: Giles, Pirates – With the lineup surrounding him, Giles should be able to get to the 50 HR plateau

The Pirates will surprise everyone. Their starting rotation has no superstars but has five guys that can have ERAs below 4.00. Their hitting should be one of the best in the league. The last time the Pirates made it to the World Series, nobody believed in them. Nobody believes now, but everyone will by the All-Star Break.

The Winadude says:

“How YOU doin’?… Yanks are back”

The class of the league is definitely the Yankees. They are the defending AL champ and have added the best hitter (Jason Giambi) in the league to their offense. I look for the Yankees to be back in the World Series again. However, it won't be easy. The Mariners and A's look great. They both have tremendous pitching and potent offenses. However, neither team could derail the Yanks last year and they haven't improved their teams this year. The Twins are playing for the state of Minnesota and the White Sox are hungry after missing the playoffs in '01. Here is how I think the playoff picture will look in the AL:

East Champ: Yanks - Pitching, Pitching and Pitching (oh, they have Jeter, Giambi, Bernie, Posada and Ventura to boot)
Central Champ: Twins - They will save the team by winning the division, look for a big year for this sentimental favorite.
West Champ: A's - Hudson, Zito and Mulder are the best 1-2-3 combo in baseball.
Wildcard: White Sox - They will slightly edge the Mariner's in a great race. The M's were great last year, but with Frank back, the Sox will be the Sox of '00. And the winner is...

Cy Young: Mulder, A's - 20 game winner easy, and look for an ERA below 2.50.
Rookie: Blalock, Rangers - He will be hitting in a great lineup and he will get great pitches to hit.
MVP: Ordonez, White Sox - Look for a 30-30 year with over 125 RBI for this young superstar. He is ready to make the Sox his team.
Charlie Hustle: Ichiro, Mariners - He defines Charlie Hustle. Defends, steals, bunts, hits for a high average and he gives the extra effort for whatever his team needs.

Look for the Yankees to get back to the World Series and come out on top this time. Rivera will not blow another clutch game like he did last year. The Yankees have a chance to beat their 114 wins from a few years ago and only the A’s can truly challenge them in a seven game series.
