The summer is finally here! As we finish the school year, it is time to pack our bags and venture to our home away from home. This summer will knock your socks off! With a combination of new activities, and enthusiastic staff members, Camp Winadu is preparing for it’s greatest summer yet. We have added new equipment, and re-vamped the individual areas in anticipation of your arrival! Check out how some of Winadu’s finest fared this month!

LOGAN LOWE and ANDREW GERMANSKY helped their soccer team to a big 1-0 win in the semi-finals and they are now playing in the state finals. DUSTIN SHAPIR was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. DAVID GABER hit two homeruns during the final game of his baseball season. DAVID’S team ended the season with an amazing 16-0 record.
JAYSON POSSER rocked the first long ball over our new Green Monster during the New Camper Open House. BEN ROSS, COLE DROTMAN AND SCHUSTER TANGER played together on a Little League team this season.

WHAT’S NEW????
Mountain biking- Camp Winadu has purchased new mountain bikes to create off-road adventure! Campers will ride in style and comfort as they cruise the trails!

Lakeside court- A full size basketball court was constructed by the theatre for the use of Winadu’s campers. The court features glass backboards and has been lengthened to NBA standards!

Golf cages- Six new cages have become part of Winadu’s facilities to accompany an ever expanding golf program. These cages will allow campers to work on their swing!

WINADU KEY STAFF PROFILES
Our 1997 Winadu Key Staff is one of the finest groups of professionals ever assembled. Here is a small sampling of their talents:

Herbert and Jennifer Hoffman - Head of Lacrosse and Administrative Assistant. Herbert is the Head Lacrosse Coach at the University of Washington and a former infantry commander in Desert Storm. Herbert takes over a growing Winadu lacrosse program that is filled with excitement. Campers can expect a new level of lacrosse instruction at camp.
Jennifer is finishing her master’s in College Administration and will be assisting in many different areas this summer.

John Whartnaby - Head of Basketball - Coach Whartnaby is student of the game. As Head Coach and Assistant Dean of Students and the Westtown School in Pennsylvania, John has produced a winning program as well as an outstanding college placement record. John has run the Philadelphia 76’ers basketball camps.

Jeff Fallon - Head of Baseball - Jeff was the youngest head coach in the nation when he became the Head Coach at Southern Vermont College in 1989. Jeff was a standout player at Southern Vermont were he was both MVP and Team Captain his last two seasons - IN BOTH BASKETBALL and BASEBALL. Jeff is currently a scouting director for high school students who are interested in playing college ball.

Garrick Respress - Head of Upper Basketball - Garrick is the Administrative Assistant for Coach Lefty Driesel at Georgia State University. Garrick was formerly the assistant coach at Yashiva High in Atlanta. Garrick brings an unparalleled passion for the game of basketball to Winadu.

Tim Gray - Head of Tennis - Tim is the Head Tennis Coach at Florida Southern College. His teams consistently rank in the top ten nationally. Tim was a nationally ranked player in college and competed in two NCAA National Championships while attending Washington College. Tim will keep our campers psyched about tennis this summer.

Scott Johnston - Brave Group Leader - Scott is entering his fourth year at Winadu. He is an elementary school teacher in Oregon. Scott has a never ending sense of devotion to every one of our campers. Scott keeps our youngest campers in great spirits with his constant smile!

Gerry Nacheman - Head of Pool - 23 years and still going strong. Gerry is a Winadu legend who is loved by every camper and staff. Our swimming program, both instructional and recreational, are always under the close supervision of one of the best anywhere!

Bill and Hannah Halden - Pioneer Group Leader and Camp Mom -Bill is an extremely organized and enthusiastic individual who was in the Navy before attending the University of Montana. He is a Business major at U of M where he met his wife Hannah. She is a Psychology graduate, and currently applying to several schools to become a physical therapist.

Trent Baalke - Lower Hornet Group Leader - Trent is a long time Winadu friend. He is currently an administrator at a private high school in Fargo, North Dakota. Trent was formerly an assistant football coach at South Dakota State University and North Dakota State University.

Joe Smith - Upper Hornet Group Leader - General Joe Average returns after being away from camp for two summers. Joe is looking forward to his September wedding.

Brad Frankel - Lower Warrior Group Leader - Last year’s color war general returns for his 12th summer. Brad is currently a senior at the University of Michigan.

Jake Hines - Upper Warrior Group Leader - Jake is back as group leader of the Upper Warriors for the second straight season. Jake is a former tight end for South Dakota State Univ. and he is currently pursuing his master’s degree in education.

Bob Rossin - Olympian/Cit Area Head - This will be Big Bob’s 19th summer at camp. Bob runs our two oldest divisions. He was named Coach of the Year in NY this year. Bob is a former standout for LIU and is the athletic director at Lehmann High School.

OUR NEW ROOKIE DAYS
Camp Winadu will offer two unique days for boys who would like to practice being a Winadu Camper for 1998. These special Rookie Days are Saturday, July 26th and Saturday, August 9th.
Boys attending our Rookie Day on July 26th will get involved in several athletic activities. Rookies will get to participate with other boys who will be first time campers at Winadu. Baseball, basketball and motor boat rides are part of the schedule along with many surprises!!
Those boys attending our Rookie Day on August 9th will get a special treat. After participating in activities, boys will be able to join in the excitement of our Carnival. This annual event includes games of skill and luck, plus prizes for all! Moonwalks, Velcro walls, human gyros and other large scale attractions will be set up on our main campus. Call our office for more details or to enroll your son.



1997 FATHER AND SON CAMP
Our Seventeenth Annual Father and Son Camp promises to be the best yet. With golf and tennis tournaments, as well as plenty of water skiing, sailing and basketball, this is a great time that you do not want to miss! Father and Son is open to older/younger brothers, uncles, grandfathers, and any friends or business associates who might enjoy participating along with you. Please send in your application or call our office to join in the fun!






ROOKIE CAMP
For those boys who are a year away from their first summer at Winadu, our Rookie Camp will get them ready for all of the fun and excitement of camp. Four days of Camp Winadu will have every Rookie ready for a full season. This program is available not only to our families but also to friends and relatives who are interested in camp. Dates for Rookie Camp are August 23rd-26th. Call us at 800-494-6238 for an application and more information.
Camp Danbee also has a Rookie Camp for girls interested in this super program. For more information contact Jay Toporoff, Director of Danbee, at 413-655-8115..

DANBEE SLEEPOVERS
Sisters of our campers are welcome to sleep over at Camp Danbee visiting weekend. Sisters sleeping over must be at least 6 years of age. This is a great opportunity to expose your daughter to the excitement of Danbee! Please call our office to arrange a sleepover for your daughter.
